What the VIN tells us
The first three characters (the world manufacturer identifier) tell us who built the truck and whether it is a light-duty pickup or chassis (Ford, Chevrolet, Ram) or a commercial truck (Peterbilt, Kenworth, Freightliner, International, and others).
Light-duty VINs decode consumer details like cab and trim. Commercial VINs decode the heavy-duty details buyers actually search by: GVWR class, engine make and model, and transmission.

On most trucks: the driver-side door jamb sticker, the dash plate visible through the windshield, the frame rail near the front axle, or any registration, title, or insurance document. It is always 17 characters and never contains the letters I, O, or Q, so if you see one of those, it is a 1 or a 0.
